The 2008 Oscars shone unusually brightly this year - not for beauty and bling, but for the international reach of the honorees. One after another unlikely winners accepted awards for humble masterpieces, thereby giving their fellow artists and dreamers hope.

Notably unexpected was the Oscar win for Best Original Song. The award went to Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova for their haunting Falling Slowly from the little Irish film, Once. Perhaps even more notable was that, when Marketa’s thank you’s were cut off, she made enough fuss backstage that Jon Stewart brought her back on to enjoy her moment – an Oscar first! In what was the most profound speech of the evening, she said that holding that award was proof that no matter how far out your dreams are, there is hope and, at the end of the day, hope is what binds us together.

The moral of this evening of recognition for independent filmmakers, musicians, artists, technicians and thinkers all over the world is neatly wrapped in the story of the brilliant rat-chef, Remy, in Brad Bird’s Oscar-winning Ratatouille: “Not everyone can be a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere.”
